Many Hong Kong businesses still run Microsoft Dynamics NAV (formerly Navision). It has served them well, but older NAV versions are out of Microsoft support, and the servers and Windows versions they need are ageing out. The question isn't whether to upgrade — it's when and how to do it with the least risk.
When should you upgrade?
- Your NAV version is out of support with no security fixes
- Servers need replacing, but new Windows or SQL versions no longer support your NAV
- Fewer staff or developers know NAV
- You need to connect e-commerce, mobile or AI tools
Upgrade steps
- 1. Assess your NAV version, customisations, add-ons and reports
- 2. Decide what to keep, replace with standard features or retire
- 3. Rebuild needed customisations as extensions
- 4. Test-migrate data in a sandbox and run user testing
- 5. Go live just after finance month-end, or over a long weekend
Will we lose data?
No. Customers, vendors, items, chart of accounts and open balances always move across; how much transaction history to migrate is agreed up front, and older history can stay readable in an archive.
Microsoft's BTC3 offer
Microsoft Bridge to the Cloud 3 (BTC3) gives eligible existing on-premises customers 30% off standard list price for Dynamics 365 online licences. Enrolment runs from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027 with a fixed 3-year term. Eligibility depends on licence purchase date and Enhancement Plan status; Microsoft's official terms apply.
The best time to upgrade is before the system fails, not after.
